Things to do in Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva has been a summer retreat for wealthy Chicago families since the late 19th century, when the Wrigleys, Schwinns and other industrialists built grand estates along the shore of Geneva Lake. Many of those homes still stand, and the lake remains a place of second homes, wooden boats, yacht clubs and resorts. The town of Lake Geneva has a walkable downtown of shops and restaurants along the water, and the nearby villages of Williams Bay and Fontana ring the rest of the lake.

  1. 01

    Geneva Lake Shore Path

A public footpath circles the entire lake, roughly 20 miles, passing directly in front of historic estates, boathouses and gardens. Many walkers tackle a short section between towns.

  2. 02

Lake Geneva Cruise Line Mailboat Tour

Mail jumpers leap from the moving boat to the piers to deliver mail during this classic summer cruise, which also points out the lake’s mansions and their history.

  3. 03

    Black Point Estate

This preserved 1888 Queen Anne summer home of a Chicago brewer is a state historic site, reached by boat tour from downtown Lake Geneva.

  4. 04

    Yerkes Observatory

In Williams Bay, this landmark observatory houses the world’s largest refracting telescope, built in the 1890s, and offers public tours and evening programs.

  5. 05

    Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

Just east of town, this large resort offers championship golf, a spa, a small ski hill and its own airstrip for guests who fly in.

  6. 06

    Big Foot Beach State Park

Just south of downtown, this park has a swimming beach on Geneva Lake, a lagoon for paddling and wooded trails for walking.
