Buffalo grew rich as the western terminus of the Erie Canal and a center of grain, steel and shipping, and that wealth left behind an exceptional collection of architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, H. H. Richardson and Louis Sullivan, plus a park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.     About 20 miles north, the oldest state park in the country puts visitors at the brink of the American and Bridal Veil Falls, with the Maid of the Mist boat and the Cave of the Winds walkways.
