Things to do in Bakersfield

Bakersfield is the seat of Kern County, which has long been California’s leading oil-producing county and ranks among the nation’s top agricultural counties. Carrots, almonds, pistachios, citrus and table grapes grow across the southern San Joaquin Valley, and some of the country’s largest produce companies operate here. Distribution centers along Interstate 5 and Highway 99 add logistics to the mix. The city is also the home of the Bakersfield Sound, the twangy country music made famous by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and of a Basque dining tradition that dates back to sheepherding days.

  1. 01

    Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace

Part museum and part honky-tonk, this venue displays Buck Owens memorabilia and hosts live country music and dancing, keeping the Bakersfield Sound alive.

  2. 02

    Kern County Museum

This open-air museum gathers dozens of historic buildings from around the county, along with exhibits on oil, agriculture and the region’s country music heritage.

  3. 03

    California Living Museum

Known as CALM, this zoo and botanical garden showcases native California animals and plants, many of them rescued wildlife that cannot be released.

  4. 04

    Basque Restaurants

Bakersfield’s family-style Basque dining rooms serve multi-course meals of soup, beans, salad, tongue and lamb at long shared tables, a local tradition for generations.

  5. 05

    Kern River Valley

About an hour northeast, the Kern River canyon and the town of Kernville are known for whitewater rafting, fishing and camping, with Lake Isabella nearby.

  6. 06

    Tehachapi Loop

In the mountains southeast of the city, freight trains spiral over themselves on this famous railroad loop, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and favorite of rail fans.
