Things to do in Garden City

Garden City is the business center of southwest Kansas, a region built on cattle, irrigated crops and the beef industry. Huge feedyards surround the city, and the beef processing plant in nearby Holcomb is one of the largest in the country, drawing workers from around the world and giving Garden City an unusually diverse population for a small High Plains town. Dairies, ethanol plants, grain operations and agricultural lenders round out an economy that depends on the Ogallala Aquifer below.

  1. 01

    Lee Richardson Zoo

This accredited zoo in Finnup Park displays animals from around the world, and walk-in admission is free, with a small fee to drive through.

  2. 02

Sandsage Bison Range and Wildlife Area

Just south of town, this state-managed range is home to a bison herd on sandsage prairie, with guided tours offered at certain times of year.

  3. 03

    Finney County Museum

Next to the zoo, the county museum tells the stories of the area’s settlers, ranching, sugar beets and the Holcomb murders chronicled in In Cold Blood.

  4. 04

    Lake Scott State Park

About an hour north, a spring-fed lake in a sheltered canyon surrounds El Cuartelejo, the ruins of the northernmost known Native American pueblo.

  5. 05

    Boot Hill Museum

In Dodge City, about 50 miles east, this museum re-creates Front Street and the town’s days as a rowdy cattle-drive destination, with summer shows.

  6. 06

    Monument Rocks

North of town in Gove County, towering chalk formations rise from the prairie, remnants of the inland sea that once covered Kansas.
