Things to do in Sedona

Sedona is a small city surrounded by some of the most striking scenery in the Southwest: sandstone buttes and spires such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, glowing red against the green of the Coconino National Forest. The local economy is built on tourism, with destination resorts, spas, galleries, jeep tours and wellness retreats drawing visitors from around the world, many of them interested in the area’s famous vortex sites. Second homes and retirees add a year-round population, and the wineries of the surrounding Verde Valley have grown into a destination in their own right.

    Cathedral Rock

Sedona’s most photographed formation rewards a short but steep scramble with views over the red rock country, while Red Rock Crossing below offers classic reflections in Oak Creek.

  2. 02

    Slide Rock State Park

In Oak Creek Canyon north of town, a natural chute of slick sandstone creates a water slide in the creek, set on a historic apple farm. Summer weekends fill early.

  3. 03

    Chapel of the Holy Cross

Built in 1956 into the red rock buttes south of Uptown, this Catholic chapel with its towering cross-shaped facade offers quiet interiors and panoramic views.

  4. 04

    Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village

Modeled on a Mexican village, with courtyards, fountains and sycamores along Oak Creek, Tlaquepaque gathers galleries, craft shops and restaurants in a setting made for wandering.

  5. 05

    Devil’s Bridge

The largest natural sandstone arch in the Sedona area is reached by a moderate hike, and the walk across its top is one of the area’s signature photos.

  6. 06

    Jerome

Clinging to Cleopatra Hill about 30 miles southwest, this former copper mining boomtown now holds galleries, tasting rooms, restaurants and a state historic park in a mining mansion.
