Things to do in Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island is a barrier island south of Charleston known for its natural beauty and world-class golf. Most of the island is a private residential community, with the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Sanctuary hotel and a collection of courses designed by some of golf’s most famous architects. The Pete Dye-designed Ocean Course has hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and two PGA Championships, and the island’s ten miles of beach, maritime forest and marshes are home to dolphins, bobcats and loggerhead turtles. Second homes, resort hospitality and golf are the island’s economy.

  1. 01

    The Ocean Course

Pete Dye’s windswept course, with more oceanfront holes than any other in the Northern Hemisphere, hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championships.

  2. 02

    The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

The resort’s oceanfront hotel offers a spa, pools, restaurants and direct access to the beach, set against the dunes on the island’s eastern side.

  3. 03

    Kiawah Beachwalker Park

A county park at the island’s western end offers public beach access to Kiawah’s wide, quiet beach, along with outdoor showers, picnic areas and lifeguards in summer.

  4. 04

    Freshfields Village

At the entrance to Kiawah and Seabrook islands, this village center has restaurants, shops, a grocery and seasonal events, serving as a gathering place for both communities.

  5. 05

    Angel Oak

On nearby Johns Island, this live oak is estimated to be several hundred years old, with sprawling limbs that shade a large area and make it a beloved Lowcountry landmark.

  6. 06

    Bohicket Marina

Near the entrance to Kiawah, this marina is the starting point for fishing charters, dolphin cruises and sunset boat trips through the tidal creeks.
