Augusta is Maine’s state capital, set along the Kennebec River in the center of the state. State government, healthcare at MaineGeneral Medical Center and retail and professional services form the core of the local economy, and the University of Maine at Augusta has its main campus here. The city’s history reaches back to the 17th-century Cushnoc trading post, and the Old Fort Western, built in 1754, still stands on the riverbank.
