Things to do in Marsh Harbour

Marsh Harbour is the commercial center of the Abacos, a chain of islands and cays in the northern Bahamas settled by Loyalists after the American Revolution. It is the place to provision, see the bank and catch a ferry, and its harbor is the main base for the yacht charter companies that work the Sea of Abaco, a sheltered stretch of shallow, turquoise water protected by a line of barrier cays. Those cays, including Elbow Cay with Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay and Great Guana Cay, are where many visitors and second-home owners actually spend their days.

  1. 01

Hope Town and the Elbow Reef Lighthouse

A short ferry ride from Marsh Harbour, Hope Town’s pastel cottages and narrow lanes sit beneath the red-and-white striped lighthouse, still hand-wound and kerosene-fueled, with views across the Sea of Abaco.

  2. 02

    Man-O-War Cay

This quiet, close-knit cay has a long boatbuilding tradition, a protected harbor and a sail loft known for its handmade canvas bags, with no rental cars on the island.

  3. 03

    Great Guana Cay

A long, narrow cay with a fine Atlantic beach and a reef close to shore for snorkeling, popular for day trips by boat from Marsh Harbour.

  4. 04

Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park

South of Marsh Harbour, this protected area of cays and coral reef is a favorite snorkeling and diving stop, home to turtles, rays and colorful reef fish.

  5. 05

    Abaco National Park

Pine forest in southern Great Abaco shelters the Abaco population of the Bahama parrot, which nests in limestone holes in the ground rather than in trees.

  6. 06

    Sailing the Sea of Abaco

Bareboat and crewed charters from Marsh Harbour explore protected water between the mainland and the cays, with easy day hops between settlements, anchorages and beach bars.
