Bimini is the closest part of the Bahamas to the United States, a pair of small islands and a scattering of cays roughly 50 miles east of Miami. Its reputation was made by the sea: Ernest Hemingway fished and wrote here in the 1930s, and the Gulf Stream running just offshore has long made Bimini a center of big-game fishing for marlin, tuna and wahoo.
