Things to do in Savannah

Savannah was laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733 on a grid of public squares, and that plan still shapes one of the largest urban historic districts in the country. Beneath the live oaks and Spanish moss is a working city: the Port of Savannah is among the busiest container ports in the United States, Gulfstream Aerospace builds and services business jets at the airport, and the Savannah College of Art and Design has filled historic buildings with students and studios. Manufacturing has grown fast in the surrounding counties, bringing a steady stream of business visitors.

  1. 01

    Savannah Historic District

Twenty-two leafy squares, each with its own monuments and architecture, punctuate the grid of the historic district, best explored on foot or by guided walking, trolley or carriage tour.

  2. 02

    Forsyth Park

Savannah’s largest park is famous for its white cast-iron fountain and oak-lined paths, and it hosts a Saturday farmers market, concerts and plenty of picnics on the lawn.

  3. 03

    River Street

Cobblestone ramps lead down to restored cotton warehouses along the Savannah River, now home to restaurants, shops and taverns with views of giant container ships passing close by.

  4. 04

    Bonaventure Cemetery

East of downtown on a bluff above the Wilmington River, this hauntingly beautiful Victorian cemetery is known for its moss-draped oaks, sculpted monuments and the grave of songwriter Johnny Mercer.

  5. 05

    Wormsloe State Historic Site

A mile-and-a-half avenue lined with hundreds of live oaks leads to the tabby ruins of a colonial estate built by Noble Jones, one of Georgia’s first settlers.

  6. 06

    Tybee Island

About 20 minutes east of downtown, Savannah’s beach town offers wide sand, a fishing pier and the Tybee Island Light Station, Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse, which visitors can climb.
