Things to do in Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor sits on Mount Desert Island beside Frenchman Bay, the main gateway town to Acadia National Park. In the late 19th century, wealthy families built grand summer estates here, and their legacy includes the carriage roads funded by John D. Rockefeller Jr. that crisscross the park today. Beyond tourism, the area is a center for biomedical research, home to The Jackson Laboratory and the MDI Biological Laboratory, as well as College of the Atlantic.

  1. 01

    Acadia National Park

Granite mountains, lakes and rocky shoreline cover much of Mount Desert Island, with highlights including the Park Loop Road, Jordan Pond and Thunder Hole.

  2. 02

    Cadillac Mountain

The highest point on the U.S. North Atlantic seaboard offers sweeping views of Frenchman Bay, and in season vehicle reservations are required for the summit road.

  3. 03

    Carriage Roads

About 45 miles of broken-stone roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. wind through Acadia, with stone bridges, and are reserved for walkers, cyclists and horses.

  4. 04

    Jordan Pond House

This restaurant beside Jordan Pond has served popovers and tea on its lawn since the late 19th century, with views of the twin mountains called the Bubbles.

  5. 05

    Shore Path

A public walkway runs along the water from the town pier past grand summer cottages, with views of the Porcupine Islands in Frenchman Bay.

  6. 06

    Bar Island Sandbar

At low tide, a gravel bar emerges between Bar Harbor and Bar Island, and visitors can walk across to the island before the tide returns.
