Washington is the seat of the federal government, and nearly everything about the city revolves around it: Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court, dozens of agencies and the law firms, trade associations, consultancies and contractors that work with them. Embassies, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund give it a global reach, and universities such as Georgetown, George Washington and Howard add scholars and students. Business travelers arrive constantly for hearings, regulatory meetings, conferences and fundraising events.

Washington’s airspace is among the most tightly controlled in the country, so private flights usually use the airports around the city rather than Reagan National. Dulles, Leesburg Executive, Manassas, Montgomery County Airpark in Gaithersburg and BWI each put travelers within reach of downtown, Northern Virginia’s office corridors or the Maryland suburbs, depending on where the day begins. Leisure visitors come for the monuments and memorials on the National Mall, the Smithsonian’s free museums, Georgetown’s rowhouse streets, a strong international restaurant scene and spring’s famous cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin.

Things to do in Washington

When to go. Spring is Washington’s signature season, when the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the blossoms around the Tidal Basin, usually from late March into April. Fall brings mild weather and fewer crowds. The Fourth of July draws huge crowds to the Mall for fireworks. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool with occasional snow. Congressional sessions, inaugurations and major events can fill hotels quickly.
