Wichita earned the nickname Air Capital of the World in the 1920s, when Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech and Lloyd Stearman were all building airplanes here, and aviation still defines the city. Textron Aviation builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft on the east side, Spirit AeroSystems makes fuselage sections for commercial jets, and Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research supports the whole industry. Koch Industries, one of the largest private companies in the country, is headquartered here too, along with healthcare systems and agricultural businesses that serve all of south-central Kansas.

For a city that builds airplanes, Wichita has surprisingly few nonstop airline routes, and many trips still involve a connection. Flying private lets suppliers, customers and executives travel direct to plants and partners around the country, and Colonel James Jabara Airport on the northeast side is close to the aviation campus. Visitors find a pleasant city built around the Arkansas River, with the Keeper of the Plains sculpture at the confluence, Old Town’s brick warehouses turned restaurants, the Sedgwick County Zoo and Botanica, and the Flint Hills and Hutchinson’s Cosmosphere within easy reach.

Things to do in Wichita

When to go. Late spring and fall bring Wichita’s most comfortable weather. Riverfest, the city’s biggest festival, fills the riverbanks with concerts, food and fireworks in late spring, and summer brings the National Baseball Congress World Series. Spring is severe-storm season across Kansas, so keep an eye on forecasts, and summers are hot and windy. Winters are cold and dry, with occasional snow and ice.
