Hanover is home to Dartmouth College, one of the country’s oldest colleges, whose green, Baker-Berry Library and Hood Museum of Art form the center of town. Along with Dartmouth Health’s medical center in neighboring Lebanon, the college drives the economy of the Upper Valley, a region along the Connecticut River that straddles the New Hampshire–Vermont border. Faculty, researchers, physicians, students and their families give this small town an unusually busy flow of visitors.
Hanover is about two hours from Boston and five from New York by car, mostly on interstates but with no fast way through the mountains. Lebanon Municipal Airport sits just a few miles south of campus, so flying private is the easiest way to reach Dartmouth for alumni weekends, parents’ visits, medical appointments or board meetings. The Upper Valley also offers hiking on the Appalachian Trail, which runs right through town, paddling on the Connecticut River, skiing at the Dartmouth Skiway and visits to Woodstock, Vermont.
