Things to do in Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island sits in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s two peninsulas, and it has been a summer resort since the late 19th century. Motor vehicles have been banned for more than a century, so visitors get around by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle or on foot, past Victorian cottages, a historic fort and a downtown of fudge shops. Most of the island is a state park, and tourism is essentially the entire economy, from the Grand Hotel and other inns to carriage tours and restaurants.

    Grand Hotel

    Opened in 1887, this landmark hotel is famous for its long front porch overlooking the straits, its formal dress code in the evening and its manicured gardens.

    Fort Mackinac

    Perched on a bluff above the harbor, this restored 18th- and 19th-century fort offers costumed interpreters, cannon and rifle firings and sweeping views.

    Arch Rock

    This natural limestone arch rises about 150 feet above the shoreline, and its overlook is one of the most photographed spots on the island.

    M-185 Shoreline Road

    The road circling the island runs about eight miles along the water, and because cars are banned it is enjoyed by cyclists, walkers and carriages.

    Main Street Fudge Shops

    The island’s fudge makers pour and paddle their candy on marble slabs in shop windows, a tradition that has made “fudgies” the local word for tourists.

    Mackinac Bridge

    Visible from the island, this five-mile suspension bridge links Michigan’s two peninsulas and is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.
