Mackinac Island sits in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s two peninsulas, and it has been a summer resort since the late 19th century. Motor vehicles have been banned for more than a century, so visitors get around by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle or on foot, past Victorian cottages, a historic fort and a downtown of fudge shops. Most of the island is a state park, and tourism is essentially the entire economy, from the Grand Hotel and other inns to carriage tours and restaurants.

Most visitors reach the island by ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace after a long drive north: around four and a half hours from Detroit and six or more from Chicago. Mackinac Island Airport sits in the island’s interior with a paved runway, and a horse-drawn taxi takes you to town or your hotel. A private flight skips the drive and the ferry lines and makes even a short getaway practical. Visitors come to bike the shoreline road, tour Fort Mackinac, hike to Arch Rock, sit on the Grand Hotel’s porch and sample fudge on Main Street.
