Harbor Springs is a small, polished resort town on the north shore of Little Traverse Bay, where some of the Midwest’s most established families have summered for generations in cottages at Wequetonsing and Harbor Point. Its deep natural harbor fills with sailboats in summer, and its shops, galleries and restaurants serve a seasonal population many times the size of the year-round town. Across the bay, Petoskey offers a larger historic downtown, the Gaslight District, and the bay’s beaches are known for fossilized Petoskey stones.

The area is about four hours from Detroit and five or more from Chicago, much of it on two-lane roads. Harbor Springs Airport sits just outside town, with Pellston’s airline airport about 15 miles north, so a private flight brings families and guests straight to the cottage. Visitors sail and swim in the bay, drive the Tunnel of Trees along the Lake Michigan bluffs, golf at the area’s resort courses, shop in Petoskey and ski at Nub’s Nob and The Highlands in winter. Ernest Hemingway spent his boyhood summers at nearby Walloon Lake.

Things to do in Harbor Springs

When to go. Summer is the heart of the season in Harbor Springs, when cottages open, sailboats fill the harbor and the Fourth of July and August weekends are busiest. Fall brings brilliant color along the Tunnel of Trees and quieter weekends into October. Winter turns the area into a ski destination at Nub’s Nob and The Highlands, with plenty of lake-effect snow. Spring is quiet and slow to arrive.
