Lansing is Michigan’s capital and, together with East Lansing, home to Michigan State University, one of the largest universities in the country. State government brings a constant flow of lobbyists, attorneys and officials, while the university’s research, agriculture and medical programs draw visitors from around the world. The region also has deep automotive roots, with General Motors assembly plants nearby, and it is a center for insurance and financial services, with several large insurers headquartered in the area.

Lansing sits roughly an hour and a half from Detroit and an hour from Grand Rapids, but airline service is limited and many trips require a connection. Capital Region International Airport is only a few miles northwest of downtown, so a private flight can bring legislative visitors, insurance and auto executives or Spartan fans close to the Capitol or campus and home the same day. Visitors come for the restored Capitol, the Broad Art Museum, MSU football and basketball, ice cream at the MSU Dairy Store and the riverfront trail system.
