Detroit is the capital of the American auto industry, and that business still shapes the region: General Motors is headquartered in the city, Ford in neighboring Dearborn and Stellantis’s North American operations in Auburn Hills, with thousands of suppliers, engineering centers and test facilities spread across southeast Michigan. Downtown has been transformed over the past two decades, with restored office towers, new mortgage and technology employers, a revived riverfront and stadiums for all four major league teams within walking distance of one another.

The metro area is huge, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport sits well southwest of downtown and the northern suburbs where many executives live and work. Private flights can use Coleman A. Young Municipal on the east side, Oakland County International in Waterford or Willow Run near Ypsilanti, putting you close to a plant, a tech center or home. From here it is an easy flight to Traverse City, Harbor Springs or Mackinac Island for the weekend. Visitors come for the Detroit Institute of Arts, Motown history, The Henry Ford, Eastern Market and the RiverWalk.

Things to do in Detroit

When to go. Late spring through early fall is the most pleasant time to visit Detroit, with concerts on the RiverWalk, festivals downtown and Tigers games at Comerica Park. The Movement electronic music festival takes over Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend, and the Detroit Auto Show remains a major event on the industry calendar. Fall brings Lions football and color in the suburbs, and winters are cold and gray, with a lively holiday season downtown.
