Dayton is where Wilbur and Orville Wright ran their bicycle shop, built their early aircraft and taught themselves to fly at Huffman Prairie, and aviation still defines the region. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, home to the Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force Research Laboratory, is one of the largest single-site employers in Ohio, and a cluster of defense contractors, engineering firms and research labs has grown up around it. The University of Dayton, Wright State University and the Premier and Kettering health systems round out the economy.

    The world’s largest military aviation museum fills hangars at Wright-Patterson with more than 350 aircraft and missiles, including presidential planes, and general admission is free.
