Dayton is where Wilbur and Orville Wright ran their bicycle shop, built their early aircraft and taught themselves to fly at Huffman Prairie, and aviation still defines the region. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, home to the Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force Research Laboratory, is one of the largest single-site employers in Ohio, and a cluster of defense contractors, engineering firms and research labs has grown up around it. The University of Dayton, Wright State University and the Premier and Kettering health systems round out the economy.

For contractors and program teams who shuttle between Dayton, Washington and other defense hubs, a private flight turns a long connecting trip into a direct one and leaves time for a full day of meetings at the base. Dayton International Airport sits north of the city, and smaller fields such as Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport serve the southern suburbs. Visitors come for the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the Wright brothers sites of the national historical park, the restaurants of the Oregon District and the village of Yellow Springs to the east, with its galleries and gorge trails.
