Athens is a classic college town set among the wooded hills of southeastern Ohio, home to Ohio University, founded in 1804 as the first university in the old Northwest Territory. The university and its medical school and hospital dominate the local economy, and the brick streets of Court Street and the College Green give the town its character. The surrounding region is rural and beautiful, with the Wayne National Forest, lakes and farms, and a strong local food and craft brewing scene supported by the Athens Farmers Market.
Athens is roughly an hour and a half from Columbus over two-lane and divided highways, which makes it a longer trip than many expect for campus visits, recruiting or university events. Ohio University Airport sits just outside town in Albany, and flying private lets parents, alumni and visiting faculty come and go on their own schedule. The same flight is a convenient way to reach Hocking Hills, about half an hour north, where cabins and lodges serve weekend visitors exploring sandstone gorges, caves and waterfalls. Strouds Run State Park, at the edge of town, adds another nearby lake and trail system.
