Columbus is Ohio’s capital and largest city, and its economy rests on a mix that keeps business travelers coming year-round: state government, The Ohio State University and its medical center, the headquarters of Nationwide and Huntington Bancshares, Cardinal Health and Wendy’s in suburban Dublin, the Battelle research institute and Honda’s manufacturing operations in nearby Marysville. Data centers and advanced manufacturing have added a new wave of construction across the region, especially to the east in Licking County.

The metro area spreads out in every direction, and private flying lets you match the airfield to the meeting. Ohio State’s Don Scott Field serves the northwest side near the university and Dublin, Bolton Field sits to the west and Rickenbacker covers the south, while a direct flight from another regional airport skips the connection a commercial itinerary through Columbus usually requires. Visitors come for Buckeye football at Ohio Stadium, the brick streets of German Village, the galleries and restaurants of the Short North and the Scioto Mile riverfront, and the sandstone gorges of Hocking Hills are about an hour to the southeast.

Things to do in Columbus

When to go. Late spring through fall is the best time to visit Columbus. The Columbus Arts Festival takes over the riverfront in June, Red, White & Boom lights up downtown around the Fourth of July and the Ohio State Fair runs from late July into August. Fall brings Ohio State home football games, when hotels fill quickly, and colorful foliage in Hocking Hills. The Arnold Sports Festival arrives in early March, and winters are cold and gray.

  1. 01

    Ohio Stadium

Known as the Horseshoe, Ohio State’s football stadium holds more than 100,000 fans on fall Saturdays and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    German Village

Just south of downtown, this neighborhood of restored 19th-century brick homes and streets is known for Schmidt’s Sausage Haus and The Book Loft, a rambling bookstore of many small rooms.

  3. 03

    Short North Arts District

High Street between downtown and campus is lined with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars, and the district’s Gallery Hop on the first Saturday of each month draws big crowds.

  4. 04

    Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

North of the city near Powell, the zoo once directed by Jack Hanna is one of the largest in the country and sits beside the Zoombezi Bay water park.

  5. 05

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

A Victorian glass house and newer biome galleries hold palms, desert plants and orchids, along with a notable permanent collection of Dale Chihuly glass.

  6. 06

    Hocking Hills State Park

About an hour southeast, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave anchor a landscape of sandstone gorges, recess caves and waterfalls popular for hiking and cabin weekends.
