Cleveland built its fortune on steel, shipping and oil, and the city still sits where the Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie, with ore boats working the river bends. Today its largest employers are health systems, led by the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, which draw patients and physicians from around the world. Sherwin-Williams and KeyCorp are headquartered downtown, Progressive and Parker Hannifin are based in the suburbs, and Case Western Reserve University anchors the cultural campus of University Circle.

Flying private works especially well here because Burke Lakefront Airport sits on the shore about a mile from downtown, steps from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Browns’ stadium, while Cuyahoga County Airport serves the eastern suburbs near the Clinic’s satellite campuses. Patients and families traveling for treatment can arrive on their own schedule without the strain of a connecting flight. Visitors come for the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Music Center, the theaters of Playhouse Square, the free galleries of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the food stalls of the West Side Market, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park begins just south of the city.

Things to do in Cleveland

When to go. Summer and early fall are Cleveland’s best seasons, with warm days on the lake, Guardians baseball downtown and outdoor concerts at Blossom Music Center, the Cleveland Orchestra’s summer home in Cuyahoga Valley. September and October bring Browns football and color in the Metroparks. Winters are cold and gray, with lake-effect snow especially heavy in the eastern suburbs, though Playhouse Square and the museums keep the city lively through the off-season.
