Toledo earned its nickname as the Glass City through companies like Libbey, Owens-Illinois and Owens Corning, which still has its headquarters downtown, and glassmaking remains part of the region’s identity alongside auto manufacturing, including the Jeep plant on the city’s north side. First Solar builds solar panels in nearby Perrysburg, the University of Toledo and ProMedica are major employers, and the Port of Toledo moves grain, coal and steel across the Great Lakes.

Toledo sits at the western tip of Lake Erie, close to Detroit and Ann Arbor but a long drive from Columbus, Cleveland and Chicago, and private flights make it easy to reach plants and suppliers without a connection. Toledo Express serves the west side, and Toledo Executive Airport sits just southeast of downtown, close to the suburbs of Perrysburg and Rossford. Leisure travelers come for the Toledo Museum of Art and its Glass Pavilion, the Toledo Zoo, Mud Hens baseball and Hungarian hot dogs at Tony Packo’s, and the Lake Erie islands and some of the best spring birding in North America are within an hour to the east.

Things to do in Toledo

When to go. Toledo is most pleasant from May through September. In May, the Biggest Week in American Birding festival draws birders from around the world to the Lake Erie marshes east of the city, and summer brings baseball, boating and island trips. Fall is crisp and colorful in the Metroparks. Winters are cold and gray, with wind off Lake Erie and periodic snow.
