Youngstown grew up as one of America’s great steel cities, with mills stretching along the Mahoning River, and its identity still reflects that heritage in its neighborhoods, ethnic churches and food traditions. Since the mills closed, the economy has shifted toward healthcare, education, logistics and advanced manufacturing, including additive manufacturing research and battery production at Lordstown to the west. Youngstown State University anchors downtown, and the city sits almost exactly halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Youngstown–Warren Regional Airport lies north of the city in Vienna, and flying private here makes it easy to cover plants and offices in the Mahoning Valley, western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio in a single trip. Families visiting Youngstown State, returning for reunions or touring the region skip the long drive in from Cleveland or Pittsburgh’s airports. Visitors come for the Butler Institute of American Art, the first museum dedicated entirely to American art, the gorge, gardens and historic mill of Mill Creek Park, performances at Powers Auditorium and a local food culture known for Italian bakeries and the famous Youngstown wedding cookie table.

Late spring through fall is the best time to visit Youngstown, when Mill Creek Park and Fellows Riverside Gardens are in bloom and summer brings festivals celebrating the city’s Italian, Greek and Slavic heritage. October brings color to the park’s gorge and Penguins football on fall Saturdays. Winters are cold and snowy, influenced by lake-effect weather from Lake Erie.
