Akron was once the Rubber Capital of the World, home to Goodyear, Firestone, B.F. Goodrich and General Tire, and Goodyear still has its headquarters here. That legacy has evolved into a cluster of polymer science and advanced materials companies supported by the University of Akron’s polymer programs, while FirstEnergy, health systems and logistics companies add to the economy. The city’s industrial wealth also left it the Seiberling family’s Stan Hywet Hall, one of the grandest country estates in the Midwest.
Akron sits between Cleveland and Canton, and private flights avoid the drive north to a major hub. Akron-Canton Airport lies just to the south, and Akron Fulton Airport, where Goodyear once built airships, is just minutes from downtown. Business travelers can visit plants and research centers in Akron, Canton and Cleveland in the same day, and families coming for a University of Akron visit or a weekend in Cuyahoga Valley National Park can skip the long drive. The city’s draws include the Akron Art Museum, the Akron Zoo, RubberDucks baseball downtown and the towpath trail, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame is less than half an hour south.
