Marquette is the largest city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, set on the rocky shore of Lake Superior and long tied to the iron mines of the nearby Marquette Iron Range. A massive ore dock still loads freighters in the harbor, and the city’s sandstone buildings date from the mining boom. Today the economy rests on Northern Michigan University, the region’s major hospital, government, mining and a growing outdoor recreation and tourism industry, and the city has become a magnet for mountain bikers, skiers and people seeking a slower pace of life.
Marquette is remote by any measure: around seven hours from Detroit and six from Chicago, much of it on two-lane roads. Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport sits south of the city at a former air base, and a private flight puts the Upper Peninsula within easy reach for a long weekend, a university visit or a business trip to the mines. Visitors come for Presque Isle Park, the climb up Sugarloaf Mountain, the Noquemanon trail network, cold-water paddling on Lake Superior and day trips to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
