Things to do in Holland

Holland was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1847, and the city still celebrates that heritage with a working Dutch windmill, millions of tulips and wooden shoe dancers each spring. It is also a busy business center: furniture makers, automotive suppliers and food companies are based in and around the city, with office furniture leader Haworth headquartered here and other major manufacturers in neighboring Zeeland. Hope College brings students and cultural events to a downtown known for its snowmelt-heated sidewalks.

  1. 01

    Windmill Island Gardens

This city park is home to De Zwaan, an authentic 18th-century Dutch windmill that still grinds flour, surrounded by tulip fields, canals and gardens.

  2. 02

    Holland State Park

Where Lake Macatawa meets Lake Michigan, this park offers wide sandy beaches, sunsets and a view of the red lighthouse known locally as Big Red.

  3. 03

    Downtown Holland

Eighth Street is lined with shops, restaurants and breweries, and its heated sidewalks stay clear of snow even in the depths of winter.

  4. 04

    Saugatuck and Douglas

South of Holland, these twin towns are known for art galleries, boutiques and restaurants, a historic hand-cranked chain ferry and boat cruises on the Kalamazoo River.

  5. 05

    Oval Beach

Backed by dunes in Saugatuck, this Lake Michigan beach is frequently named one of the best freshwater beaches in the country.

  6. 06

    Nelis’ Dutch Village

This family attraction recreates a 19th-century Dutch village with canals, gardens, wooden shoe carving demonstrations and klompen dancing.
