Things to do in St. Augustine

Founded by the Spanish in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the contiguous United States, and its narrow streets, coquina walls and Spanish colonial buildings make that history easy to feel. The Castillo de San Marcos guards the bayfront, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age hotels anchor the downtown skyline, and St. George Street is lined with shops, taverns and museums. Horse-drawn carriages and trolley tours still clip along the bayfront.

    This coquina fortress, built by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S., with cannon-firing demonstrations by costumed rangers on many days.
