Things to do in Los Alamos

Los Alamos was a secret city during World War II, the site where the Manhattan Project designed the first atomic bombs, and it remains defined by science. Los Alamos National Laboratory, one of the largest science and engineering institutions in the world, dominates the local economy, and the town spread across the finger-like mesas of the Pajarito Plateau has one of the most highly educated populations in the country. Scientists, contractors, government officials and visiting researchers travel here constantly, and Manhattan Project National Historical Park preserves the wartime history.

  1. 01

    Bradbury Science Museum

The laboratory’s free public museum downtown covers the Manhattan Project and the lab’s current research in fields from supercomputing to space science, with interactive exhibits.

  2. 02

    Los Alamos History Museum

Beside historic Fuller Lodge and Bathtub Row, where leading scientists lived during the war, this museum tells the story of the Los Alamos Ranch School and the secret city.

  3. 03

    Bandelier National Monument

South of town, trails in Frijoles Canyon lead past ancestral Pueblo dwellings carved into soft volcanic tuff, with ladders climbing to an alcove high in the cliff.

  4. 04

    Valles Caldera National Preserve

West of town in the Jemez Mountains, a vast volcanic caldera holds grassy valleys, trout streams and large elk herds, with hiking, fishing and scenic drives.

  5. 05

    Pajarito Mountain

This small, locally run ski area above town offers winter skiing on forested slopes and, in summer, lift-served mountain biking and hiking when operating.

  6. 06

    Jemez Springs

Over the mountains to the west, this village in red rock Jemez Canyon offers natural hot springs, bathhouses and the Jemez Historic Site’s pueblo and mission ruins.
