Austin has grown from a capitol-and-college town into one of the country’s most important technology centers, with major campuses for chipmakers, software companies and electric-vehicle manufacturing alongside a deep bench of startups and venture investors. State government and the University of Texas keep lobbyists, researchers and visiting faculty moving through, and the city’s calendar of conferences, festivals and races brings in the rest of the world several times a year.

Getting in and out has not kept pace with that growth. Interstate 35 is famously congested, and the main commercial airport can be packed on big event weekends, which is exactly when a direct flight into a smaller airfield pays off. Leisure travelers come for live music on Sixth Street and South Congress, barbecue worth waiting in line for, swimming at Barton Springs and easy access to Hill Country wineries, Lake Travis and towns like Fredericksburg and Wimberley. Flying in a Cirrus turns a long weekend in Austin into one that starts on Friday afternoon instead of Saturday morning.

Things to do in Austin

When to go. Austin’s spring and fall are the sweet spots. March brings SXSW and the first Hill Country wildflowers, while October hosts the two-weekend Austin City Limits Music Festival in Zilker Park, and Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas typically lands in the fall as well. Those weekends fill hotels quickly, so plan ahead. Summers are hot, which is when Barton Springs and Lake Travis come into their own.

  1. 01

    Texas State Capitol

Built of pink granite in the 1880s and taller than the U.S. Capitol, the statehouse anchors the north end of Congress Avenue and offers free guided tours of its rotunda, chambers and grounds.

  2. 02

    Barton Springs Pool

Fed by natural springs in Zilker Park, this three-acre pool stays close to 70 degrees year-round and has been Austin’s favorite place to cool off for generations.

  3. 03

    South Congress Avenue

Just south of the river, SoCo is lined with vintage shops, boot stores, food trucks, live music venues and restaurants, with a classic view straight up the avenue to the Capitol.

  4. 04

    Congress Avenue Bridge Bats

From roughly March through October, North America’s largest urban bat colony emerges from beneath the bridge at dusk, a spectacle best watched from the banks of Lady Bird Lake or from a sunset boat tour.

  5. 05

    Sixth Street and Red River

Austin’s live music reputation comes alive in the clubs and bars of these downtown districts, where you can hear rock, country, blues and indie acts on any night of the week.

  6. 06

    Lake Travis

This long reservoir on the Colorado River west of town is the place for boating, paddleboarding, cliffside sunsets and lakeside restaurants, with Hill Country wineries close by.
