Galveston is an island city about an hour southeast of downtown Houston, and it lives a double life as a working port and a beach getaway. It is one of the busiest cruise ports in the country, the University of Texas Medical Branch is a major academic medical center and the island’s largest employer, and shipping, port operations and marine research keep business travelers coming year-round. Texas A&M University also runs a maritime campus on Pelican Island.
For leisure travelers, Galveston offers miles of beaches along the Seawall, one of the best-preserved collections of Victorian architecture in the country, and a history shaped by the Great Storm of 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Interstate 45 and the causeway can back up badly on summer weekends and cruise days, and flying in a Cirrus lets you skip that crawl and start your weekend on the island rather than in traffic. Moody Gardens, the Pleasure Pier and the restaurants and galleries of the Strand fill the days, and fishing charters head out into the Gulf from the harbor.

Things to do in Galveston
When to go. Galveston’s beach season runs from late spring into early fall, with summer bringing the biggest crowds. Spring and fall offer warm water with fewer people, and late winter brings Mardi Gras Galveston, one of the larger Mardi Gras celebrations in the country. The first weekend of December brings Dickens on the Strand, a Victorian holiday festival. Hurricane season runs June through November, so watch the forecast.
