Fort Worth wears its cowboy heritage proudly, but its economy is anything but frontier. Aerospace and defense manufacturing anchor the city’s west side, rail and logistics operations along the Alliance corridor in the north move freight for the entire country, and banking, healthcare and energy fill out the downtown skyline. Many visitors split their time between Fort Worth and Dallas, two cities that share a Metroplex far larger than most people expect.

Flying private means landing on the Fort Worth side of the Metroplex instead of fighting crosstown traffic from a large hub, which can easily eat an hour each way at rush hour. For leisure, the city offers a rare combination: twice-daily cattle drives in the Stockyards, honky-tonks like Billy Bob’s Texas, and a Cultural District where the Kimbell Art Museum, the Modern and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art sit within walking distance of one another. Weekend trips often stretch to Granbury’s lakeside square, the dinosaur tracks of Glen Rose or the ranch country farther west.

Things to do in Fort Worth

When to go. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather to Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo runs for several weeks from mid-January into early February, one of the city’s signature traditions, and the Stockyards stay lively year-round with weekend rodeos. May brings PGA Tour golf to Colonial Country Club, a tournament held there since the 1940s. Summers are hot, so plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning.

    Kimbell Art Museum

Louis Kahn’s celebrated vaulted building and Renzo Piano’s adjacent pavilion hold a compact but exceptional collection spanning antiquity to the 20th century, with works by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet and Picasso.

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Tadao Ando’s concrete-and-glass pavilions appear to float on a reflecting pond, housing a strong collection of postwar and contemporary art across from the Kimbell.

  4. 04

    Billy Bob’s Texas

Billed as the world’s largest honky-tonk, this former cattle barn in the Stockyards hosts major country artists, dance lessons and live bull riding on weekend nights.

  5. 05

    Sundance Square

Downtown’s entertainment district centers on a pedestrian plaza with fountains and shade canopies, surrounded by restored brick buildings full of restaurants, bars, shops and theaters.

  6. 06

    Fort Worth Water Gardens

Designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1974, this downtown urban park features terraced concrete pools, including a dramatic stepped basin where water cascades down to a pool below.
