Corpus Christi is the commercial capital of the Texas Coastal Bend, home to one of the country’s largest ports by tonnage, which ships crude oil, liquefied natural gas and petrochemicals around the world. Refineries, export terminals and a naval air station add to a steady flow of engineers, contractors and executives, while agriculture and wind energy across the surrounding plains bring their own business traffic.

The city is also a beach town at heart. Padre Island National Seashore protects the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world, Port Aransas and Mustang Island sit just across the bay, and Rockport and Fulton offer fishing, galleries and birding farther up the coast. Driving in from San Antonio, Austin or Houston means hours on highways that funnel holiday traffic toward the shore, while a direct flight can have you on the sand by early afternoon. The same steady breeze that makes Corpus Christi one of the country’s favorite windsurfing and kiteboarding spots keeps the bayfront comfortable on warm evenings.

Things to do in Corpus Christi

When to go. Corpus Christi is a year-round destination, though spring and fall offer the best balance of warm water and comfortable air. Spring break crowds peak in March, and summer brings family beach trips and sea turtle hatchling releases at Padre Island National Seashore. Fall and winter are prime for birding, when migrants and wintering whooping cranes arrive along the Coastal Bend. Hurricane season runs June through November, so keep plans flexible.

  1. 01

    Padre Island National Seashore

Some 70 miles of protected beach, dunes and tidal flats stretch south of the city. In summer, rangers hold public releases of Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings, the world’s most endangered sea turtle.

  2. 02

    USS Lexington Museum

The World War II aircraft carrier nicknamed the Blue Ghost is moored on the bayfront, with restored aircraft on the flight deck, tours through the ship’s decks and flight simulators.

  3. 03

    Texas State Aquarium

Across the harbor from downtown, the aquarium focuses on the Gulf and Caribbean, with sharks, dolphins and sea turtles, and runs a wildlife rescue center for injured coastal animals and birds.

  4. 04

    Port Aransas and Mustang Island

A short drive and free ferry away, this laid-back island town is known for wide beaches, deep-sea fishing charters and Mustang Island State Park’s miles of open shoreline.

  5. 05

    Corpus Christi Bayfront and Seawall

Designed with input from Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the stepped seawall along Shoreline Boulevard is the city’s front porch for walking, cycling and watching sailboats on the bay.

  6. 06

    Selena Museum

Run by the family of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla, who grew up in Corpus Christi, the museum displays her stage costumes, awards and memorabilia. Her bayfront memorial, Mirador de la Flor, is nearby.
