Beaumont is where the modern petroleum industry took off: the Spindletop gusher of 1901 turned a small lumber town into a boomtown and helped launch some of the most recognizable names in the oil business. Today the Golden Triangle of Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange is home to some of the largest refineries and petrochemical complexes in the country, along with busy ports and shipyards, while Lamar University adds engineering talent and academic depth.

That industrial base means constant travel for plant managers, engineers, inspectors and contractors, many of them coming from Houston or Louisiana. Interstate 10 between Houston and Beaumont can be slow, and during plant turnarounds every hotel and highway in the area feels the strain, so a direct flight can recover hours in a single trip. Visitors find more than industry here: Cajun and Creole cooking influenced by neighboring Louisiana, the forests and bayous of the Big Thicket National Preserve, excellent birding in the coastal marshes and a music history that runs from Janis Joplin to George Jones.
