San Antonio pairs some of the oldest history in Texas with a modern economy built on the military, healthcare, cybersecurity and financial services. Joint Base San Antonio makes the city one of the country’s largest military centers, the South Texas Medical Center anchors a large healthcare and research sector, and major insurers, banks and energy companies keep headquarters and big offices here. That mix brings a steady flow of contractors, physicians and executives who need to come and go on their own schedules.

For visitors the pull is just as strong: the River Walk, five Spanish colonial missions that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Hill Country towns like Boerne, New Braunfels and Fredericksburg a short drive north. Flying private means skipping the crawl on Interstate 35 toward Austin and the long highway miles to the coast, and arriving at a smaller airfield where your car can be waiting. A Cirrus fits neatly into a weekend that pairs a family celebration in town with a few nights at a ranch or winery outside it.

Things to do in San Antonio

When to go. Spring is San Antonio’s best season, with wildflowers in the Hill Country and Fiesta San Antonio in April, an eleven-day citywide celebration of parades, music and food that dates to the 1890s. Fall is warm and pleasant, and in December luminarias and holiday lights line the River Walk. Summers are hot, so plan outdoor sightseeing for mornings and evenings and save afternoons for museums and the river.

  1. 01

    The Alamo

Founded as Mission San Antonio de Valero in 1718, the Alamo is where Texian defenders fell in the 1836 battle. Its church and Long Barrack stand on Alamo Plaza in the center of downtown.

  2. 02

    San Antonio River Walk

Miles of stone paths line the river one level below the streets, connecting restaurants, hotels and shops downtown with the Museum Reach to the north and the Mission Reach to the south. River barge tours run year-round.

  3. 03

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Missions Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada are still active parishes, linked by a hike-and-bike trail along the river. San José, the largest, is known for its restored church and carved rose window.

  4. 04

    The Pearl

The former Pearl Brewery north of downtown is now a lively district of restaurants, shops, the Hotel Emma and a Culinary Institute of America campus, with a well-loved weekend farmers market.

  5. 05

    Historic Market Square

Known locally as El Mercado, this downtown square is one of the largest Mexican markets in the United States, with dozens of shops and restaurants, live music and festivals throughout the year.

  6. 06

    Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Built into the walls of a former limestone quarry on the northwest side, this theme park is known for its roller coasters, summer water park and themed areas celebrating Texas and Mexican culture.
