Wichita Falls is the commercial center for a broad stretch of North Texas and southern Oklahoma. Sheppard Air Force Base, home to a large technical training wing and the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program, brings military personnel and officers from allied nations, while manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture and oil field activity fill out the economy. Midwestern State University adds a campus community and a steady calendar of academic and athletic events.

The city sits well northwest of the Metroplex on the way to Oklahoma, and the drive from Dallas or Fort Worth eats up most of a morning in each direction. A direct private flight makes a plant visit, a graduation at Sheppard or a family weekend far easier to fit into a busy week. Visitors come for the rebuilt falls the city is named for, the riverside trails of Lucy Park, the quirky World’s Littlest Skyscraper downtown and the fishing lakes nearby. Each August, cyclists from around the world arrive for the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, a hundred-mile ride in the late-summer heat.

Things to do in Wichita Falls

When to go. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather to Wichita Falls, though spring is also severe-storm season across North Texas. Late August brings the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, one of the largest single-day bicycle rides in the country, when hotels fill quickly. Summers are hot, and winters can turn cold and windy when northern fronts sweep across the Red River, so pack for changeable conditions.

  1. 01

    The Falls

The original falls on the Wichita River washed away in a flood in the 1880s, and the city rebuilt them in 1987. The cascading waterfall is visible from Interstate 44 and reachable by a riverside trail.

  2. 02

    Newby-McMahon Building

Known as the World’s Littlest Skyscraper, this tiny 1919 building downtown is the legacy of an oil-boom investment scheme in which the plans were drawn in inches rather than feet.

  3. 03

    Lucy Park

Along the Wichita River near downtown, this large city park features a swinging pedestrian bridge, a duck pond, walking trails and a connection to the path leading to the falls.

  4. 04

    River Bend Nature Center

This nature center offers a conservatory with a butterfly habitat, wetland trails and hands-on exhibits about the plants and wildlife of North Texas, making it a favorite with families.

  5. 05

    Lake Arrowhead State Park

Southeast of the city, this park on Lake Arrowhead offers fishing, boating, camping, an equestrian area and a prairie dog town that delights young visitors.

  6. 06

    Kell House Museum

Built in 1909 by one of the city’s founding families, this historic home preserves original furnishings and offers a glimpse into Wichita Falls’ early 20th-century growth.
