Sugar Land grew from a sugar plantation and refinery town, where the Imperial Sugar refinery operated for generations, into one of the most prosperous suburbs southwest of Houston. Corporate headquarters, energy and engineering firms, healthcare systems and technology companies are based here, and its home in Fort Bend County, one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the country, gives the city a distinctly international character, reflected in its restaurants and markets.

For travelers, Sugar Land offers a practical way into greater Houston from the southwest. Landing on this side of the metro keeps you close to west Houston, the Galleria and the medical and energy employers along the Southwest Freeway without crossing the whole region from a major hub on the far side of town. Visitors find plenty to do: concerts at Smart Financial Centre, Triple-A baseball at Constellation Field, the shops and restaurants of Sugar Land Town Square, and alligators and stargazing at nearby Brazos Bend State Park. It is also a comfortable base for family visits, school events and weekend trips across the Houston area.
