Lubbock is the commercial center of the South Plains, a vast agricultural region that ranks among the most important cotton-growing areas in the world. Texas Tech University and its health sciences center drive research, healthcare and a large share of the local economy, while agribusiness, regional banking and medical services draw people in from across West Texas and eastern New Mexico.

The city is a long way from everywhere else in Texas. Dallas, Austin and San Antonio are each a full day of driving there and back, and airline options typically mean connecting through a larger hub. A private flight turns a Texas Tech football weekend, a recruiting visit or a sales call to an equipment dealer into a simple out-and-back. Visitors also come for the region’s wine: the High Plains grow a large share of the state’s wine grapes, and Lubbock’s tasting rooms show them off. Add the Buddy Holly Center, the canyon country of the Caprock Escarpment and some of the biggest skies in Texas.

Things to do in Lubbock

When to go. Lubbock’s dry, sunny climate makes spring and fall the most pleasant seasons, though spring can bring strong winds and blowing dust. Fall is the city’s busiest time, when Texas Tech football fills Jones AT&T Stadium on home weekends and harvest season winds down across the vineyards and cotton fields of the High Plains. Summers are hot but less humid than eastern Texas, and winters are generally mild with occasional cold snaps and snow.

  1. 01

    Buddy Holly Center

This museum celebrates Lubbock’s most famous son with personal artifacts, including his signature glasses, along with exhibits on West Texas music. The Buddy Holly statue and West Texas Walk of Fame are across the street.

  2. 02

    National Ranching Heritage Center

On the Texas Tech campus, this outdoor museum preserves dozens of authentic ranch buildings, from dugouts and windmills to bunkhouses and ranch houses, relocated from across the region and restored.

  3. 03

    Lubbock Lake Landmark

An archaeological and natural history preserve documenting roughly 12,000 years of human occupation on the Southern High Plains, with walking trails through active excavation areas and an interpretive center.

  4. 04

    Texas Tech University

The campus is known for its Spanish Renaissance–style architecture and a large public art collection, and home football games at Jones AT&T Stadium bring the whole city out in red and black.

  5. 05

    Lubbock Wineries

Tasting rooms in and around the city, including Llano Estacado Winery, one of the oldest in modern Texas winemaking, and McPherson Cellars, pour wines made from High Plains grapes.

  6. 06

    Silent Wings Museum

Housed in the former terminal of the city’s original airport, the museum tells the story of America’s World War II glider pilots, many of whom trained near Lubbock.
