Things to do in Astoria

Astoria was founded in 1811 as a fur trading post and is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. It sits on steep hills above the mouth of the Columbia River, where ships cross one of the most dangerous river bars in the world, and the town’s maritime identity is still central: bar pilots, fishing fleets, cargo ships and the Coast Guard all work these waters. Victorian homes, restored canneries turned into hotels and breweries, and a working waterfront give Astoria a character all its own, and it has appeared in films including The Goonies.

Atop Coxcomb Hill, this tower painted with scenes of regional history has a spiral staircase leading to views of the river, the ocean and the mountains.

    Fort Stevens State Park

West of town, this park combines a historic military fort, beaches, lakes, trails and the rusting wreck of the Peter Iredale on the sand.

About 25 miles south, this artsy beach town sits beside Haystack Rock, a towering sea stack with tidepools and nesting puffins in spring and summer.
