Astoria was founded in 1811 as a fur trading post and is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. It sits on steep hills above the mouth of the Columbia River, where ships cross one of the most dangerous river bars in the world, and the town’s maritime identity is still central: bar pilots, fishing fleets, cargo ships and the Coast Guard all work these waters. Victorian homes, restored canneries turned into hotels and breweries, and a working waterfront give Astoria a character all its own, and it has appeared in films including The Goonies.

The drive from Portland takes about two hours on two-lane roads through the Coast Range, and longer on summer weekends. Flying private lands you at Astoria Regional Airport across Youngs Bay, a few minutes from downtown, and puts the whole north coast within reach. Visitors explore the Columbia River Maritime Museum, climb the Astoria Column, walk the Riverwalk and visit Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1805–06. Seaside and Cannon Beach, with its famous Haystack Rock, are a short drive south.

Things to do in Astoria

When to go. Summer and early fall bring the most reliable weather to Astoria, with mild temperatures and the best beach days, though fog can roll in at any time. The Astoria Regatta takes place in August. Winter is stormy and wet, with dramatic seas at the river mouth, and February’s FisherPoets Gathering brings commercial fishermen and writers to town for readings and music.
