Newport is the busiest working port on the central Oregon coast, set on Yaquina Bay with a fishing fleet that lands Dungeness crab, rockfish, shrimp and albacore. Ocean science is a big part of the town’s identity, with Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center and NOAA’s Pacific marine operations base on the bay, and tourism, fishing and seafood processing make up much of the economy. The Historic Bayfront, Nye Beach’s cottages and inns, and two lighthouses give it plenty of character.

Newport is about two and a half hours from Portland by car on winding highways over the Coast Range, and longer on summer weekends. Flying private lands you at Newport Municipal Airport, just south of town, and makes a coast getaway possible on a Friday afternoon. Visitors come for the aquarium, fresh seafood on the Bayfront, sea lions barking from the docks, whale watching and charter fishing, and the beaches and headlands stretching north to Depoe Bay and south toward Yachats and Cape Perpetua.

Things to do in Newport

When to go. Summer and early fall are the most reliable seasons on the central coast, with mild temperatures and calmer seas, though fog is common. Gray whales migrate past in winter and spring, and some feed offshore through summer. The Newport Seafood and Wine Festival in February is one of the town’s biggest events. Winter is wet and stormy, a good season for storm watching from a cozy inn.
