Eugene is Oregon’s second-largest city and home to the University of Oregon, which drives much of the city’s economy, culture and calendar. Its track and field heritage runs deep: coach Bill Bowerman developed running shoes here, his former runner Phil Knight co-founded Nike with him, and rebuilt Hayward Field hosts major championships. Healthcare, software, food and beverage producers and the broader Lane County economy add to the mix, along with a strong counterculture streak and a growing wine region to the south and west.
Eugene is about two hours south of Portland on I-5 and far from most other cities, so game days, recruiting visits, meet weekends and business trips are much easier by air. Flying private puts you at Eugene Airport, a short drive from campus and downtown, and lets you fly direct to Bend, the coast or southern Oregon. Visitors come for Ducks football and track meets, the Saturday Market, wineries in the southern Willamette Valley and outdoor trips up the McKenzie River to waterfalls, hot springs and the Cascade lakes.
