Portland is Oregon’s largest city and the business center of the state, set where the Willamette River meets the Columbia with Mount Hood on the eastern horizon. Nike’s world headquarters is in nearby Beaverton, adidas runs its North American operations from the city, Columbia Sportswear is based in the suburbs, and Intel’s largest operations sit to the west in Hillsboro. Oregon Health & Science University, a busy port, metals manufacturing and a strong design and creative economy round it out, and the city is famous for food carts, craft beer, coffee, bookstores and a dense network of parks.

Traffic on the region’s bridges and freeways can turn a cross-town trip into an hour, and Portland International sits on the city’s northeast edge. Flying private lets you choose Hillsboro if your meetings are in the west-side tech corridor, Troutdale for the Gorge, or PDX itself, and fly direct to Bend, Medford, the coast or Sun Valley. Visitors come for the restaurants and gardens, and for side trips to the Columbia River Gorge, the Pinot Noir country of the Willamette Valley, Mount Hood and the beaches of the north coast, all within about 90 minutes.

Things to do in Portland

When to go. July through September is Portland’s dry season, with warm, sunny days and long evenings for dining outdoors, hiking the Gorge and visiting wineries. The Portland Rose Festival fills late May and June with parades and events, and fall brings harvest in the Willamette Valley. From November through March, expect frequent rain and gray skies, though the mild temperatures keep the city green and the ski areas on Mount Hood open.
