Things to do in Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is a mountain resort town on the south shore of its namesake lake, high in the San Bernardino Mountains at close to 7,000 feet. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, operated together as Big Bear Mountain Resort, are the most popular ski areas within reach of Los Angeles, and the lake draws boaters, anglers and paddlers every summer. Tourism and vacation homes, many owned by Southern California families, drive the local economy, and the Village along the lakeshore holds most of the town’s restaurants and shops.

Marinas around the lake rent pontoon boats, kayaks and paddleboards, and the lake is stocked for trout fishing, with bald eagles often seen in winter.

    Big Bear Alpine Zoo

This small rehabilitation zoo cares for injured and orphaned native animals, including black bears, mountain lions and bald eagles, that cannot return to the wild.

  5. 05

    Castle Rock Trail

A short but steep hike from the north side of the lake climbs to a granite outcrop with sweeping views of the water and surrounding peaks.

  6. 06

    Alpine Pedal Path

This paved, mostly level path follows the north shore for several miles, ideal for easy bike rides and walks with lake and mountain views.
