Big Bear Lake is a mountain resort town on the south shore of its namesake lake, high in the San Bernardino Mountains at close to 7,000 feet. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, operated together as Big Bear Mountain Resort, are the most popular ski areas within reach of Los Angeles, and the lake draws boaters, anglers and paddlers every summer. Tourism and vacation homes, many owned by Southern California families, drive the local economy, and the Village along the lakeshore holds most of the town’s restaurants and shops.

Reaching Big Bear by car means climbing narrow mountain highways with sharp switchbacks, heavy weekend traffic and chain controls during winter storms, so a two-hour drive can easily stretch to four. Big Bear City Airport sits at the east end of the valley, just a few minutes from the lake. A short private flight from the coast means more time on the slopes in winter and on the water, trails and mountain bike routes in summer, when the mountain air stays far cooler than the basin below. Mountain weather can change quickly, so stay flexible in winter.

Things to do in Big Bear Lake

When to go. Ski season typically runs from December into March or early April, helped by extensive snowmaking. Summer brings warm days and cool nights, with boating, hiking and mountain biking far from the heat of the valleys below. Big Bear’s long-running Oktoberfest fills weekends from September into early fall, and autumn brings crisp air and changing leaves. Winter storms can bring chain controls on mountain roads, so plan with flexibility.

This small rehabilitation zoo cares for injured and orphaned native animals, including black bears, mountain lions and bald eagles, that cannot return to the wild.

  5. 05

    Castle Rock Trail

A short but steep hike from the north side of the lake climbs to a granite outcrop with sweeping views of the water and surrounding peaks.
