The city of Napa sits at the southern end of Napa Valley, which runs about 30 miles north through Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena to Calistoga. Hundreds of wineries line Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail, and the valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon has been world famous since the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, when Napa wines from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Chateau Montelena outscored top French bottles. Wine production, hospitality, vineyard real estate and events make up most of the local economy.

The drive from San Francisco takes one to two hours depending on traffic, and Highway 29 itself slows to a crawl on summer weekends. Napa County Airport lies just south of the city, so you can fly in from Los Angeles, San Diego or Lake Tahoe and reach a tasting appointment, a vineyard walk or a property showing shortly after landing. Visitors divide their time between the riverfront restaurants and tasting rooms of downtown Napa, the celebrated dining rooms of Yountville, including The French Laundry, and the hot springs and mud baths of Calistoga.

Things to do in Napa

When to go. Harvest, from late August through October, is Napa’s busiest and most atmospheric season, with crush underway and the vineyards at their fullest. Late winter is quieter, when yellow mustard blooms between the bare vines. BottleRock Napa Valley brings a major music festival to downtown over Memorial Day weekend, and Auction Napa Valley draws collectors in early June. Summers are warm and dry, and weekend lodging books well in advance year-round.

  2. 02

    Oxbow Public Market

Downtown Napa’s food hall gathers local purveyors, oyster bars, bakeries, wine and coffee under one roof beside the Napa River, a good stop before heading up valley.

  3. 03

    Yountville

This small town packs an exceptional concentration of restaurants into a few walkable blocks, led by Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry and his more casual bistro, Bouchon.

  4. 04

    Silverado Trail

The quieter road along the valley’s eastern edge links many well-known wineries, including those of the Stags Leap District, and offers a calmer alternative to Highway 29.

  5. 05

    Calistoga

At the north end of the valley, Calistoga is known for geothermal hot springs, volcanic-ash mud baths and spa resorts, along with a relaxed main street and nearby wineries.

  6. 06

    Castello di Amorosa

Near Calistoga, this winery built in the style of a medieval Tuscan castle features towers, a drawbridge, courtyards and barrel-lined underground cellars open for tours and tastings.
