San Diego’s economy rests on a few deep pillars. The Navy and Marine Corps have a large presence, from Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and a substantial defense contracting industry has grown up around them. On the Torrey Pines mesa near UC San Diego, the Salk Institute and Scripps Research anchor one of the country’s leading life sciences clusters, and Qualcomm keeps the city central to wireless technology. Tourism, the port and cross-border trade with Tijuana add to the mix.

San Diego International sits right on the bay and operates with a single runway, so private flying here often means using one of the region’s other airfields. Montgomery-Gibbs Executive in Kearny Mesa is minutes from the biotech campuses, Gillespie Field serves East County, and McClellan-Palomar in Carlsbad is convenient for Rancho Santa Fe and the North County coast. Weekend visitors come for Balboa Park, the beaches of La Jolla and Coronado, craft breweries, Baja-influenced cooking and summer racing at Del Mar.

Things to do in San Diego

When to go. San Diego has some of the mildest weather in the country, with most days between the 60s and the 70s. Late summer and early fall bring the warmest ocean water and the clearest skies, while May and June often start gray under a marine layer. Comic-Con fills downtown each July, and the summer racing season at Del Mar begins about the same time. Gray whales migrate past the coast from winter into early spring.

  1. 01

    Balboa Park

This 1,200-acre park north of downtown gathers more than a dozen museums, the Old Globe theaters and Spanish Revival buildings from the 1915 exposition among gardens and walking paths.

  2. 02

    San Diego Zoo

Inside Balboa Park, the world-renowned zoo is known for its conservation work and naturalistic habitats, with an aerial tram and guided bus tours to help cover its canyons.

  3. 03

    USS Midway Museum

A decommissioned aircraft carrier on the downtown waterfront, the Midway lets visitors explore the flight deck, hangar bay and crew quarters, with restored aircraft and veteran docents throughout.

  4. 04

    La Jolla Cove

Sea lions and harbor seals lounge on the rocks below La Jolla’s cliffs, and the protected waters of the adjoining underwater park draw snorkelers and kayakers exploring its sea caves.

  5. 05

    Hotel del Coronado

The red-roofed Victorian resort opened in 1888 and still anchors the wide, sandy beach on Coronado, across the bay from downtown by bridge or ferry.

  6. 06

    Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Trails through this coastal reserve lead past rare Torrey pines to sandstone bluffs and beach views, just south of the famous public golf course that has hosted the U.S. Open.
