Palm Springs became Hollywood’s desert retreat in the middle of the 20th century, and that era left a remarkable collection of midcentury modern homes, banks and civic buildings by architects such as Albert Frey, William Krisel and E. Stewart Williams. The resort cities of the Coachella Valley stretch southeast from here through Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells and La Quinta, with luxury resorts, country clubs and well over a hundred golf courses. Hospitality, real estate, second homes and health care drive the local economy.

The drive from Los Angeles on Interstate 10 can take three hours or more on a Friday afternoon, which makes a private flight an easy way to stretch a winter weekend. Palm Springs International is just two miles from downtown, and Jacqueline Cochran Regional in Thermal serves the eastern valley, close to the polo grounds and festival sites near Indio. Visitors come for golf and tennis, poolside afternoons, hiking in the Indian Canyons, the aerial tramway up Mount San Jacinto and day trips to Joshua Tree National Park.

Things to do in Palm Springs

When to go. The season runs from about October through May, when days are warm and sunny and evenings cool. February brings Modernism Week, with home tours and talks across the city. The BNP Paribas Open fills Indian Wells in March, and the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals take over Indio in April. Summers are extremely hot, often well above 110°F, but resort rates drop and early mornings remain pleasant for golf.
